Emília Simão holds a PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms from the University of Porto (UP). She completed Master’s degrees in Media Arts at the University of Minho (UM), in Multimedia at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP), and in Art Studies at the Superior School of Arts of Porto (ESAP). She also holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda (IPG).
She is currently an Assistant Professor at Universidade Portucalense (UPT), Porto, where she teaches New Media Aesthetics, Emergent Artistic Practices, Artistic Research, Sound Art and Interface Design in the Multimedia and Arts Degree as well as Multimedia Communication in the Master’s programme in Innovation in Education.
Her main research interests focus on New Media Arts, Electronic Music, Digital Platforms, Digital Aesthetics, and Digital Culture. She is co-coordinator of ObEMMA — the Scientific Observatory of Electronic Music and Media Art — and a collaborating researcher at CITCEM (Transdisciplinary Research Centre for Culture, Space and Memory, University of Porto).
She is the author of several academic publications and conference communications, primarily addressing Electronic Dance Music Cultures, Immersive Environments and Experiences, and Media Arts. She is a member of the organising and scientific committees of ARTECH — International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts; KISMIF — International Conference on DIY Cultures, Sustainability and Artistic Ecosystems; and NOIZE — International Workshops on Electronic Music, Aesthetics and Territories. She has also participated in several exhibitions as both artist and curator.
